Common Web Design FAQ

When you've been designing and developing web sites for over 11 years, you discover there are many common questions that come up in the process. Large site or small, simple or complex, many of the questions are the same.

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

How much does it cost to have a web site designed?

The simplest answer: It depends. Without knowing what your expectations and requirements are for your web site it's hard to say. To give you some perspective: A very simple site could start as low as $500, where a completely custom e-commerce enabled web site might start at $5,000 and range considerably higher.

How long does it take to design a web site?

This depends on a variety of things: site size, site complexity, level of programming, content availability, as well as the designer's project load. You should receive a quote that includes pricing information and an estimated completion date based on those factors. Keep in mind, if you're not prepared with the items your designer needs to create the site, it will probably take longer.

Are there affordable ways for a small business to get started selling online?

Absolutely. I've developed sites for small businesses on a shoe string budget that allow visitors to request information, and even purchase items online. It's doable, but expect to do some of the work yourself.

How can I minimize the cost?

Good question. The best way to minimize your costs in the development of your web site are through planning and preparation.
Like any project you undertake for your business, your input determines the outcome. You know your business better than anyone: planning and preparation on your part gives the best start in the creation of your site.

Things you should consider:

  • What do you expect from your web site? Be specific.
  • What kind of color scheme do you have in mind? What's your style?
  • Do you have a logo, or will you need to have one created?
  • Do you have your content ready? Content includes the text for your site, pictures of your products if that applies, a list of products including pricing, details, and option; basically anything you want to display on your site. Having these things ready to go can significantly reduce your costs if the designer doesn't have to spend time re-editing, replacing or reshuffling text.
